The Sarah's Cafe Story
As a young mother, Sarah started out in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in 1982. With two hundred
dollars borrowed from friends and family, she made candy and pastries in her own kitchen and
sold them to local patrons. Just one year later, Sarah opened her first restaurant in the Harbor,
selling pizza, specialty sandwiches, and desserts. The business did very well. Many patrons
commented that they "appreciate good home-cooked food."
In 1987 Sarah, a hard worker and dedicated mother with strong family and community values,
opened a second restaurant in Wiscasset, Maine. After a year, running both Wiscasset and
Boothbay restaurants, Sarah reluctantly decided to close the Boothbay Harbor store. Friends
and patrons missed her business, but were happy to travel to Wiscasset, along with many
out-of-town patrons, to enjoy her fresh home-cooked Maine food.
To her staff, Sarah is a pleasurable employer, and working in the small town of Wiscasset is
handy for mothers, students and friends. Many have worked at the Café for 5, 10, 15 years and
more. Students have transitioned from first-time jobs at Sarah's to go on to college or open
businesses of their own.
Along with operating a successful restaurant, Sarah has raised her sons through college, and
gained admiration as a local charitable contributor. In March 2002 she was named Restaurateur
of the Year by the Maine Restaurant Association. Sarah has also received the Good Neighbor
Award for outstanding community service. The entire midcoast community has a deep
appreciation for Sarah and her contributions to her neighbors and the State of Maine.
